How many dinner plates do i need

Mugs, which often arrive in our house as gifts, have one shelf on which they live. The shelf is full so when a new mug arrives, either it is immediately donated or it replaces one that is on the shelf. And I love the one in and one out rule on mugs. Nicely done! This makes me want to rethink my party plates. We would use them instead of paper products and have developed a large amount for our larger parties.

Since Covid though we have only done parties there are 15 or fewer people only immediate family members so do I really need them taking up my china cabinet — no! Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Hi Sabrina — You are so welcome. I am delighted to give you some food for thought.

Good Luck! I have more than three, so there you go! The one I use the least is my wedding china. The other three are used every year. That said, I have a few pieces that I inherited that are not complete sets.

Great advice. I agree with you, how much do we need. I would suggest planning to meet your everyday needs. When parties arise you can borrow, rent, have people bring their own dishes. I have suggested that family members buy the same wine glasses and then when someone needs a lot of them they can borrow from another family member and the glasses all match.

Everyone needs a reality check when it comes to things like tableware. We have one set of dishes and silverware, but we have a lot of them. We have space for them. Chances are you'll continue to love them.

But if you're at all uncertain or are acting out of impulse, don't think of a set of white plates as safe but rather as a backdrop to enhance your food. Distinctive textures and shapes can make white anything but boring. If you start with a white pattern, you have a canvas to which you can later add colored and decorated accent pieces as your tastes change or you add to your collection. If you really want to try introducing color to your table, opt for bright serving pieces.

Think about how eye-catching hot pink jeans look paired with a crisp white shirt or the way bright blue walls benefit from white moldings and ceilings. Right now, it's very popular to register for place settings made up of pieces that don't match. I don't think that's a smart choice.

You'll find if you start with a core set of matching pieces, patterned, banded, or solid, it'll be easier to add other patterns and colors and personalize your table settings. Over time, you're bound to inherit family heirlooms or be tempted by dishware at flea marketsr. Perhaps you'll want to have fun accessorizing with holiday-themed appetizer plates, square Asian dishes, or vintage glass plates.

You'll find it easier to mix and match add-on pieces to a set of basics and especially if it's white. A You don't! That's why I warn couples not to fall into a trendy trap and register for a fashion forward pattern that will one day leave them scratching their heads and saying, "What were we thinking? When you're browsing on the web, look under patterns organized by "classic," "traditional", and "contemporary" for designs that have proved to be enduring.

If you're seriously in doubt or "in love" with something trendy, your best bet is to avoid a very expensive pattern that you'll feel obliged to use forever. Just as you'll own more than one great handbag or sofa in your lifetime, chances are another dinnerware pattern will appeal to you down the road and you can have just as much fun updating your tabletop wardrobe as you do revamping your clothes closet.

A Most people opt for stainless steel because it's relatively inexpensive and easy to care for and there's an abundance of patterns to complement every taste. But, if you're smitten by silver and think it's in your guests' gift budgets, there's no reason to shy away from it. Silver has a color and luster that you just can't get from stainless.

If you are purchasing for longevity, solid or banded white pieces are timeless, versatile options. They make an elegant base when you wish to add more colourful accent pieces to your table, and they also enhance the look of the meal. Should you purchase a dinnerware set, place setting or open stock?

The answer relies on a range of factors, which includes what your personal needs may be. Before deciding, consider the following:. Another idea is to buy white dinnerware that works for formal and casual use, and then dress it up or down with accessories such as placemats, chargers and linens.

You can use accessories like napkins to add colour and personality to an otherwise neutral table. Alternatively, these accessories can tone down boldly-coloured or patterned dinnerware. Something to consider before you go out and purchase stacks of dinner plates and a dozen or more place settings is the amount of storage space you have available. It is also important to take into consideration when you are deciding whether to invest in one set that can do double duty or two sets for different types of occasions.

For example, dishwasher-safe, break-resistant dinnerware would give parents more peace of mind, while the microwave-safe dinner plates make reheating leftovers a jiffy. Break-resistant dinnerware sets are perfect for outdoor entertaining and if you have kids in the house. It is a good idea to check the care instructions to verify if your dinnerware is dishwasher, microwave, and oven safe.

Set your table your way. Trust me. You will find plenty of other stuff to buy. Just why? Do you ever really use those except when your dinner plates are used? You could probably get a new or almost new set for almost nothing. The Quality — Plus, with thrift stores, you could probably afford better quality. I have gotten really expensive sets by snagging them a few pieces at a time.

It seems people who buy high quality china do not want an incomplete set. They will donate it and buy new, and we get the benefit. It gives you something to look for when you shop. Plus, family members are always looking for gift ideas. Of they know you are collecting a set, they can be on the lookout for missing pieces.

The Investment — Fancy china can be worth a pretty penny. Buy it, collect a full set, take good care of it, and when you decide to change to another pattern, you could resale and make a buck or two. Our family has a small set of dishes that we keep in our cabinets for everyday, and a few sets of china that I have collected in my china cabinet for years. I even have a few in storage. Cause I got control of that dish situation most of the time. You can check out my collection here.
